Alcohol Interlock Installation & Servicing in Newcastle and the Central Coast

Looking for a trusted alcohol interlock provider in Newcastle or the Central Coast? Guardian Interlock has you covered with accredited service centres across the Hunter region and Central Coast.

If you’ve recently received an alcohol interlock order in NSW, one of the first things on your mind is finding a reliable, accredited service centre close to home or work. For residents of Newcastle, the Hunter Valley, and the Central Coast, Guardian Interlock has authorised service centres ready to help you get started quickly and with minimal hassle.

What Is the NSW Alcohol Interlock Program?

The NSW Mandatory Alcohol Interlock Program (MAIP) is administered by Transport for NSW (TfNSW). If you’ve been convicted of certain drink driving offences, you’ll be required to have an alcohol interlock device installed in your vehicle for a minimum period – typically between 12 and 36 months – after your disqualification period ends.

The interlock device connects to your vehicle’s ignition. You must provide a breath sample before starting your car, and the vehicle won’t start if alcohol is detected above the allowable level. The program is designed to help you demonstrate safe, sober driving behaviour before returning to a full, unrestricted licence.

If you choose not to participate, you’ll remain disqualified from holding a licence for five years from your date of conviction – making the interlock program the far more practical path for most people.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Getting started with the Guardian interlock program is straightforward:

Before your appointment: Once booked, you’ll receive a secure link to complete all pre-installation paperwork and online training in advance, so you arrive fully prepared.

On the day: Bring your TfNSW reminder letter, photo ID, concession card (if applicable), and your vehicle. A qualified technician will install the Guardian 2030 interlock device and provide hands-on training so you’re confident using it from day one.

Ongoing servicing: Most participants are serviced every 60 days (bi-monthly), though monthly or quarterly options may be available depending on your circumstances and driving record.

How Long Will the Program Take?

In NSW, the interlock period typically ranges from 12 to 48 months, depending on the nature of your offence and your individual program requirements. Your TfNSW paperwork will specify your exact program length.

To complete the program, you’ll need to demonstrate at least six months of safe driving behaviour – showing that you can consistently separate drinking from driving – before you become eligible for a full licence without an interlock condition.

Costs and Concessions

Program costs include:

  • Installation fee (varies by vehicle type)
  • Monthly lease fee for the interlock device
  • Service fee at each scheduled service
  • Removal fee at the end of the program ($120 in NSW)

Concession rates are available for eligible participants. If you hold a valid concession card, you may qualify for reduced fees on installation, lease, one service, and removal. You’ll need to submit an e-Services confirmation form – Guardian can assist with this.

A Severe Financial Hardship subsidy is also available through Service NSW for those who qualify. Contact Service NSW on 13 22 13 to find out if you’re eligible.
