On 1 February 2015, stricter penalties for NSW drivers convicted of serious and repeat drink driving offences came into effect. Convicted offenders are now subject to a minimum licence disqualification period, followed by a mandatory period of participation in the state’s alcohol interlock program.

Prior to 1 February 2015, participation in the program was on a voluntary basis. Those who began participation in the voluntary program before this date will continue to be subject to the terms and conditions of the voluntary program. More information on the transition can be found here.
