Living With an Alcohol Interlock: Practical Tips for Day‑to‑Day Driving

If you have been ordered onto an alcohol interlock program, we know it can feel overwhelming at first. There is a lot to take in, and the idea of blowing into a device every time you drive is a big adjustment.

Our goal at Guardian Interlock is to make day‑to‑day life with your interlock as straightforward as possible so you can focus on getting through the program and back to a full licence.

Give yourself a little extra time before every trip

One of the simplest changes is allowing a few extra minutes before you need to leave. Your interlock needs time to power up, run its self checks and prompt you for a breath test. If you are rushing, every small delay feels bigger than it is.

We suggest building a routine: start the car a few minutes before school drop‑off or work, complete your initial test and only then load bags or get the kids settled.

Treat those moments as part of your normal driving habits and you will find the process becomes second nature quite quickly.

Learn how your device behaves

At installation, our technicians show you exactly how your Guardian device works: how long it takes to warm up, how to provide a proper breath sample and what different sounds and messages mean. Paying close attention during this training makes life much easier later on.

If you are ever unsure, call us. We would much rather answer your questions early than see you run into avoidable issues. Knowing your device well builds confidence and reduces anxiety, especially in the first few weeks.

Watch out for “hidden” alcohol sources

Many people are surprised by how sensitive an interlock is. It is designed to pick up small amounts of alcohol, which means certain everyday products can cause a failed test if used right before you blow. These can include some mouthwashes, hand sanitisers, perfumes and cleaning sprays. Also eating right before you take a test, many foods can cause a mouth alcohol reaction leading to small readings.

Our simple rule is this: avoid using alcohol‑based products in or around the car, and leave a buffer between using them and doing a test. If you do get an unexpected fail and you have not been drinking, open the doors or windows, rinse your mouth with water and wait for the next prompt. Never keep trying over and over again in the same conditions.

Plan for random retests on longer trips

Your interlock will randomly ask for “rolling retests” while you are driving. These are designed to make sure you remain alcohol free during the journey. When a retest is due, the device will warn you with beeps and a message giving you time to pull over safely.

We recommend keeping an eye on your prompts and looking ahead for safe places to stop, particularly on motorways or unfamiliar roads.

Never try to blow while actively steering or in heavy traffic. Your safety and the safety of others on the road comes first.

Keep up with servicing and maintenance

Regular service appointments are an essential part of your program. At each visit, we download data, check the device and make sure everything is working as it should. Turning up on time helps you avoid additional fees and potential program extensions.

If you notice anything unusual in between visits – such as repeated error messages or difficulty providing a sample – contact your local Guardian service centre. Most issues can be resolved quickly when we know about them early.

Look after yourself, not just the device

Living with an interlock is about more than technology. It is a chance to reset your relationship with alcohol and driving.

Many participants find it helpful to rethink their social routines, plan alternative transport on nights out and reach out for support if they are struggling.

If your program is part of a broader plan with your doctor, counsellor or treatment provider, keep them in the loop about how you are going. A positive mindset and a good support network make a big difference to how you experience this period.
