What To Expect In Your First Month On An Alcohol Interlock Program

Starting an alcohol interlock program can feel overwhelming, especially in the first few weeks when everything is new.

Guardian Interlock focuses on making that first month as clear and structured as possible so you can get used to your device, meet your program requirements and get back to safe, legal driving.

Getting Started: Installation And Training

Your first contact point is usually a booking at one of Guardian’s authorised interlock service centres. At this appointment, the technician will install the device in your vehicle and set it up in line with your state alcohol interlock program requirements.

Our pre installation process includes initial training in device use and program requirements to ensure a smooth installation appointment. Installation includes hands-on device training, so you know how to provide a breath sample, understand the beeps and messages, and know what to expect before and after each trip. You will leave the service centre feeling more confident about driving with the device.

Daily Use: Breath Tests, Prompts And Routine

In your first month, the biggest change is getting used to providing a breath test every time you want to start the car. The device will ask you to blow and hum into the handset, and if your breath sample is below 0.020, the vehicle will start as normal.

You should also expect “rolling retests” while you are driving, where the device prompts you to provide another sample at random intervals. This is a standard safety feature of modern alcohol interlock programs and helps prove that you are staying alcohol‑free for the whole journey, not just at startup. Building a little extra time into each trip during your first few weeks makes it easier to handle these prompts calmly and safely.

Your First Service Appointment And Data Reports

Participants will have their first service appointment at the end of the initial month on the program. At this visit, the service centre checks the device, downloads data and sends it to the relevant authority that oversees your interlock program.

Those reports include information such as completed breath tests, any failed readings, missed rolling retests or evidence of tampering. Consistent, violation‑free use may help you qualify for longer gaps between services over time, such as moving from monthly to bi‑monthly servicing where allowed under your program rules.

Our team can explain how your specific program works when you first sign up.

Common First‑Month Challenges (And How To Handle Them)

The first month is when most people make their mistakes, usually because they are still getting used to the routine. Eating certain foods, using mouthwash with alcohol or rushing to respond to a rolling retest can all cause unnecessary stress or even program violations if not handled correctly.

Our tips for getting through your ignition interlock program recommends keeping your device clean, rinsing your mouth with water after eating and never trying to “beat” or tamper with the device. If something does not seem right – for example, error messages or suspected false positives – contacting Guardian promptly is the best way to get advice and avoid problems escalating into missed services or extended program time.

Always ensure you complete every retest request even if you have reached your destination. Ensure you review you interlock screen for any messages before turning off your vehicle. Once you’ve turned the car off the interlock will allow you to restart the vehicle for 3 minutes without needing to provide another test. This is a safety feature incase your vehicle stalls. You don’t need to wait for this countdown to conclude to exit your vehicle.

Staying On Top Of Your Program Requirements

Beyond simply using the device, your alcohol interlock program comes with rules around servicing dates, payments and how long the device must stay installed in your vehicle. Your State Alcohol Interlock Program page outlines how program length is decided and what happens if you choose to remove the device early or change vehicles.

Your first month is the ideal time to mark upcoming service windows in your calendar, set reminders for lease or service payments and learn who to call if your circumstances change.

Guardian’s nationwide network and support team are there to help you through things like selling your car, moving between service centres or handling financial difficulties, so you stay compliant and avoid additional fees where possible.

Focusing On Safety, Routine And The Bigger Picture

While your first month with an alcohol interlock can feel like a big adjustment, many participants find that once they settle into a rhythm, the device becomes just another part of starting the car. The technology is there to help separate drinking from driving and support safer roads, in line with broader road safety goals across Australia.
