Everything To Know About Your Ignition Interlock Device

Guardian Interlock specialises in ignition interlock devices, which can be installed in most cars, motorcycles and trucks. Ignition interlock devices are generally installed for drink driving offenders, although there are private interlock systems for personal or commercial use. The aim of installing breathalysers for car ignition is to keep both the driver and others safe on the roads, ensuring the car cannot start unless a successful reading is received by the interlock device.

You may have some general questions surrounding your ignition interlock device, about the process of breathalysers for car ignition or the process of installing, servicing and removing your interlock device. Here is some information to answer some questions you may have:

Ignition interlock devices for mandatory programs and private systems

Guardian Interlock provides devices for mandatory state alcohol interlock programs in New South Wales, Victoria, Northern Territory, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia. The conditions of how the Interlock Device operates in the interlock program depends on the state, with the data logs from a participant on an offender program overviewed by state-specific transport authorities to ensure that they are complying with the program conditions. Ignition interlock devices are generally fitted in these circumstances where the user has been convicted of a drink driving offence and will have to use the device for a specific time period.

Private interlock systems are available for private or commercial use and may be fitted for a variety of reasons, such as for safety at work or personal reasons. At Guardian, we provide voluntary interlock device installations, servicing and removal of interlock devices to users in metropolitan and regional areas nationwide through our number of approved service centres. Qualified professionals at our approved service centres carry out these tasks to ensure your device is installed, serviced and removed seamlessly.

Our friendly team at Guardian can help you understand the costs and payment options involved with voluntary interlock devices. Data for Private clients are not sent to authorities.

How do ignition interlock devices work?

Once the interlock device is fitted to your car by an expert at one of our approved service centres, the breathalyser for car ignition will be active. The interlock device requires a breath test for your vehicle to start, if the breath test reads a result that exceeds the pre-determined alcohol level the driver will not be able to start the vehicle. The user will have the opportunity to complete another breath test after a set amount of time has elapsed since the previous attempt. The information regarding the locked ignition is recorded which is transmitted to the Traffic Authority who will make a determination regarding your program. The ignition interlock device will also prompt the user for random breath tests throughout their journey.

At Guardian Interlock, we are here to help keep your loved ones safe. Our devices are manufactured and certified to ensure both the driver and others are safe on the roads.

The process of removing your interlock device

If you are on a state interlock program, Guardian Interlock has a large number of service centres Australia wide where we can assist you with removing your interlock device once your alcohol interlock program has been completed, or you decide to stop using the device. If you choose to remove your ignition interlock device before the completion of your program, there may be fees that apply, you should contact the Traffic Authority prior to removing it to understand what impact it will have on your program and licence. If you are looking to remove your interlock device, visit one of Guardian’s approved service centres near you, and our experts will be able to help you with the device removal process. The device can only be removed by an Authorised Guardian Service Centre otherwise it is tampering which may have severe consequences imposed by the Traffic Authority. These restrictions do not apply to private or commercial interlocks.
