Completing Your Interlock Program: What the Final Stages Actually Involve

After months of breath tests, service appointments, and rolling retests, reaching the end of an interlock program is a genuine milestone – but it is not always clear to participants exactly what that ending looks like in practice. Is the device simply removed on your minimum completion date? What if you missed a test along the way? Does your licence go straight back to normal? This guide walks through what actually happens in the final stages, so you know what to expect rather than guessing.

The Compliance Review: What It Actually Assesses

As you approach the end of your minimum interlock period, the licensing authority reviews your compliance data – the full record of every breath test, every rolling retest, every service appointment, and any recorded violations across the entire program period, not just the final weeks. This is why consistent compliance from the very start of your program matters more than a strong finish: a clean recent record does not erase an earlier pattern of missed tests or failed samples from the assessment. Each state has their own removal approval process, you should speak with your road traffic authority to ensure you’ve completed all requirements.

What Counts as a Violation on Your Record

Different events are weighted differently in a compliance review. A single failed test, isolated and followed by an immediate clear pass, is generally treated differently from a pattern of repeated failures or a clear attempt to circumvent the device. Missed services, especially where no genuine attempt was made to reschedule in advance, are treated seriously because they interrupt the continuous monitoring the program is designed to provide. Where your record shows a pattern of concern rather than isolated incidents, your program period can be extended rather than concluding on schedule.

How Extensions Work

If your compliance review identifies concerns, most state programs provide for an extension of the interlock period rather than an immediate return to unrestricted driving – effectively requiring a further period of demonstrated, consistent compliance before program completion is reconsidered. This is disappointing for participants who are ready to finish, but it reflects the program’s core purpose: demonstrating a genuine, sustained pattern of separating drinking from driving, not simply serving out a fixed calendar period.

Booking the Removal Appointment

Once your compliance review is approved for removal, the final step is booking a removal appointment at an accredited Guardian service centre. This is generally a shorter appointment than the original installation, since it involves removing the device and any associated wiring rather than the more involved fitting process. We cover what to expect during installation – which mirrors much of the removal process in reverse – in our guide to interlock device installation.

What Your Licence Looks Like Afterwards

Once the device is removed and the licensing authority processes your program completion, your licence returns to an unrestricted status, free of the interlock condition. Depending on your state and the nature of your original offence, some residual conditions relating to the original offence – separate from the interlock requirement itself – may still apply, so it is worth confirming your complete licence status directly with the licensing authority once your program concludes.

The Option to Voluntarily Continue

A number of participants, having become genuinely comfortable with the routine of an interlock device, choose to voluntarily retain a private interlock system for a further period after their mandatory condition ends – as their own additional safeguard and reassurance, entirely by personal choice rather than any ongoing requirement. Our private interlock systems, including the Dignita AL-100, are available on flexible purchase, lease, or rent-to-buy terms for exactly this kind of voluntary continuation.
